Germany is known for its efficiency, but unfortunately this does not apply to the bureaucracy. Many services have to be still handled in person and a paper application is needed. There are many mandatory tasks which have to be done when arriving in Germany for a longer stay.
Following are some of the mandatory steps for everyone staying long term in Germany:
- Registration at the City Hall (within 14 days)
- Opening a bank account
- Registering for a health insurance
- Paying the mandatory broadcasting fee
- Transfer drivers license (within 6 months)
The broadcasting fee also called “Rundfunkbeitrag” covers the cost of producing television and radio for several public-funded bodies. Even though you might not use any of the services, the payment is compulsory. A payment request will be sent automatically after the registration at the town hall. It is also important to deregister once leaving Germany.
The official language is german. Most bureaucrats know English but are not allowed to speak it during most processes. If the visit is regarding a complicated matter, it is recommended to take a translator.
